Best Company
The best company that I ever worked for was Johnson's Wax. The company treated people like a big family. They had programs for your education and personal development. The company owned vacation property that was on a first come first serve basis. That meant that if a production worker got the booking in for a specific date a senior manager could not take it away. When I worked there there was a policy that hourly workers were on probation for 5 years and then their job was their own for life. All management worked on two year contracts. If things were not working out at the end of the year your contract would not be renewed. This meant that you had 12 months to find another job in the company or with some other company. Another policy was the company store where you could purchase any product for a ninety percent discount. There was not a lot of shrinkage due to stealing. It was the way that people treated each other as well as how your supervisor treated me that has always made this an extra ordinary company to work for. Over the years I have met workers in different places and have found that they all share my experience with the company. An interesting note. I was working in a different industry and went to an appointment in the world headquarters of Phillips petroleum in Bartlesville Oklahoma. I commented to the person that the architecture looked familiar. My appointment said to what. I replied that I had worked for Johnson's wax in Racine Wisconsin and that their HQ was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The person that I was talking to said with a smile as is this building. |
