A new way to get a job
By Chris Holm
The company had some unique features. Feature one the building was built when Lincoln was President. Heat exchangers take open flames to soldier the joints. So there you have it. A post and beam building of 6 stories. Retro fitted with electricity and gas for the torches. On a cool evening it would be 110. I went problem solving. The first thing I noticed was there were regions of the factory that were kind of dark. Supervisors would use flashlights to read job tickets. Well armed with a long pole and a feather duster I began to clean light fixtures. The light improved 30%. This is where things got interesting. Because I could see more I noticed that the people move slower on the second shift as there were so many pallets that only one person could use an aisle at a time. My next action was to look at the job tags. And to my surprise I found that the dates for the jobs on some of the pallets went back to world war two. In my 20 something brain I thought “you know, I bet that the people that filled out those tickets were dead. So I took the parts and put them back in inventory and put the pallet away. That does not sound like such a big deal. What harm was it. I kept busy out of the way. Well the law of unintended consequences took over after only 4 short weeks. I remember it well there was a real gulley washer that night. I was finishing up my first job, dumping the garbage in the compactor. The rain came so hard that I could hardly see the compactor from the loading dock doors. I was soaked to the skin after putting the first of 6 large containers in the dumpster. I was coming back for the second container when the plant superintendent (who never worked swing shift) appeared in his white shirt and tie. He asked me if I was the night porter and I turned to show him the tee shirt I had made that said garbage man. He then asked me what I had been doing. I replied I was emptying the garbage into the compactor. He swore at me and asked me do you know why plant productivity improved 20% in the last month. Now it is important that you know that in a gulley washer in the Midwest you keep moving so I had not stopped emptying the garbage. He then asked why purchases for parts had gone down by 30% and that it appeared that the company would not need to order new pallets for a year. The story ends with a garbage man being offered any job in the company.
